The Arts and Environment Centre

The following organisations have office accommodation within the Cominos building. Each organisation contributes to the management of Cominos House through the board of Friends of Cominos House.

Cairns and Far North Environment Centre

Objectives:

• Campaigning for the FNQ environment - everything from grass roots activism to lobbying ministers.
• Representing environmental interests in the Far North region to government, industry and other sectors of the community.
• Providing communication services for the region's environment movement.
• Sponsoring research on matters relating to the region's environment.
• Maintaining an easily accessible community library and resource centre with materials relating to environmental issues.
• Aiding the establishment of, and providing support to, like-minded local organisations
• Raising awareness and understanding of environmental issues to members and the wider community.

The Visual Arts Association of Far North Queensland Inc. (VAA)

Objectives:

The Cairns Visual Arts Association consists of a network of visual arts organisations and practicing artists in the Cairns Region.
It is dedicated to the development of visual art and artists in the region and are active in the promotion of exhibitions, fostering awareness of the visual arts and the facilitation of arts events. This includes the provision of communication, liaison, referral and coordination services between member groups, government agencies and other interest parties. A principle concern is to raise issues relating to the visual arts in the region in an open and frank manner - to stimulate public debate.

Cairns Art Society Inc.

Objectives:

• The Association of artists and those interested in art for mutual instruction in painting; drawing; etching; sculpture; ceramics; and activities associated with these media.
• For the exchange of ideas on these subjects
• The fostering of the appreciation of art by holding competitions and art orientated activities.

The Caims Art Society was established in 1931, and since then has had a proud history of promoting the enjoyment of art and assisting artists throughout North Queensland. The Society has staged over 50 Annual Exhibitions, many major exhibitions, and numerous successful seminars and workshops, for the benefit of the community and artists.
