FRIENDS OF COMINOS INC.
P.O. BOX 129N NORTH CARNS, QUEENSLAND, 4840
FROM THE PRESIDENT'S REPORT 2002 - 2003
This year, again has seen a steady flow of people
utilising the Rose Blank Gallery and the centre in general.
We are in the process of renewing our lease with
Council for another five year term, which should ensure an
on-going home for us all in beautiful surrounds.
Our Museum Display is regularly visited by both
tourists and people from the
The FOCH web-site is kept up to date. We utilise
the free hosting service offered by the State Library of
Queensland's Community Web Publishing Program and a specific link
has established with Cairns City Council.
Our garden project is also developing with the
Botanical Garden team forever thinning out vegetation and
planting new plants, according to our garden plan. Also labels
identifying trees are being placed around in the garden, so
visitors can get to know our native plants.
Together with the Coral Society, in July this
year, we re-applied for funding through the Gaming Community
Benefit Fund to landscape and re-vegetate the boundary between
the two properties. The application included upgrading driveway
and parking facilities at the Choral Society. The Cairns City
Council gave both groups in kind support towards the
project and have already started their work. We have been advised
that we have been successful in receiving $10,000 towards the
project from the Benefit Fund, so with Ron Ruffley at the helm
the two organisations can look forward to a busy time ahead..
Many thanks to our caretaker Stan Gentle, who
continues to ensure smooth operation of the centre and keeps the
whole place clean specially the floor in the Rose Blank Gallery,
which is always nice and shiny.
I would like to personally thank the Management
Committee for their help and support during the year, it
certainly relieves the pressure.
"Friends of Cominos"- like us all -
have challenging times ahead as circumstances and conditions
change. I hope that the new committee with commitment from Cairns
City Council will continue to make the centre a true home for
Arts and Environment activities
Thank you
Lone White
